About Us

Redefining what's curable.
What is CURED?

CURED is a group of researchers aimed to combat the Unmet, Rare and Emerging diseases using the common thread of Immunology as the major driver of all diseases

Billions of people suffer from diseases that medical research doesn't prioritize, not because the science is impossible, but because the incentives aren't there. Rare diseases whose potential cures are priced out of reach. Infections that devastate marginalized populations. Cancers that don't respond to existing therapies. Autoimmune conditions with no cure in sight. These are the diseases that fall through the cracks of a system built around profit, not patients.

Berkeley was built on the conviction that knowledge should serve people, not power. Jim Allison's basic T cell research led to cancer immunotherapy. Jennifer Doudna's curiosity about bacterial biology yielded CRISPR. Neither was a targeted drug program. Both changed medicine forever. CURED brings that instinct to science and medicine, pointing Berkeley's deepest scientific capabilities at the problems that matter most. What makes Berkeley different is what makes CURED possible: we sit outside the pharmaceutical system, free from the pressure to pursue only profitable diseases, and we draw on disciplines medical schools rarely touch, from chemistry, engineering, and computer science to public health, computation, and One Health.
