Discovery science with social responsibility

CURED encompasses a multipronged approach to convert fundamental discoveries into cures in a socially responsible manner. The scientists of CURED share an “esprit de corps” to challenge existing paradigms of drug discovery and tackle diseases deserving of greater attention, including those that disproportionately affect women, such as autoimmunity, and diseases of poverty like tuberculosis.

In addition to the scientific mission of CURED, we have outstanding education, training and outreach programs to prepare the next generation of scientists for the diseases of our future.  Our Alliance for Global Health works hand-in-hand with partner universities in Africa to generate a new generation of scientists to lead Africa to be a scientifically sustainable continent capable of beating rising pandemics, AIDS, tuberculosis and other infectious diseases. CURED also houses several of UC Berkeley’s top PhD and Postdoctoral training programs and is also heavily invested in undergraduate training opportunities with its COMPASS and LSBE undergraduate fellowships.

CURED scientists will harness the unique power of Berkeley’s entrepreneurial spirit to move these discoveries into the clinic and ultimately into patients.  The partnerships that CURED has cultivated with the Bakar BioEngenuity Hub, Berkeley’s SkyDeck Venture Capital group, the Robinson Life Science and Business Entrepreneurship program as well as the greater Bay Area biotech community allows our discoveries to seamlessly transition into testable cures.
