New technologies and approaches with broad impact across many diseases

Instead of applying an existing technology to a single disease, we are inspired by Berkeley’s past successes innovating disruptive technologies that radically change the approach to multiple diseases. For example, former Berkeley faculty member Jim Allison pioneered approaches to harness the immune system to cure multiple forms of cancer (awarded the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine). Current faculty member Jennifer Doudna realized that an immune system in bacteria called CRISPR could be engineered as a powerful gene editing tool (awarded the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry). CURED is particularly motivated by the emerging insight that the immune system plays a crucial role in many diseases—including cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and metabolic diseases—previously assumed to be unrelated to the immune system.
